This collection consists of three versions of each song, progressing in difficulty for the first, second, and third years of piano study, for a total of 90 arrangements. By combining all three difficulty levels in one collection, it is possible to work from beginning to end, creating your own "crash course" in playing piano music.
ABOUT THIS BOOK
These are the arrangements I created for my piano students during the Christmas season. Over the years, I observed that for most students, there is not enough time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to learn big arrangements of new material, but, if we build on the previous years' work, students can prepare impressive performances even during a busy holiday season.
The premise of this collection is that if you know and love these songs, you will be able to use these songs to learn how to play piano music in general. For many years, the songs in the first book have been learned, performed, and enjoyed by students who only started piano lessons 3 months earlier. So, here's how to do it:
In Book One, play all the songs starting with the ones you know and love the most. In all fairness, you’re not starting at exactly “zero”. You will need to know the names of the white keys on the piano, and number your fingers 1-5, thumb is one and little finger is five. Hand Positions are always presented, and except for Middle C Position, they tell you the lowest note of the hand position: LH (left hand) 5 or RH (right hand) 1.
“Middle C Position” (both thumbs on middle C) is the only hand position that does not indicate the lowest note. Santa's picture means Middle C position, with no hand position changes, so these are the easiest.
In Book Two, the RH (right hand) progresses to playing complete melodies by itself, freeing the LH (left hand) to play TRIADS in root position for a solid accompaniment. Triads are easily recognized three note chords (LH fingers 5 3 1) with the hand position note on the bottom (lowest note).
Triads are so common and fundamentally important that they get special attention. "v” simply means one skipped key between thumb and 2nd finger. Cv2 and Cv3 mean:
C is the lowest note (hand position)
v means one skipped key between thumb and finger 2
2 or 3 answer two remaining crucial questions. Given the easily recognizable three note chord (triad), it is easy to understand that fingers 1 and 5 play the highest and lowest (outer) notes. But the middle note is not obvious.
What note is it?
Which finger plays it?
The large number (2 or 3) answers both questions.
Finally, hand positions and finger numbers are sometimes challenging, but not generally interesting, compelling, or motivating in and of themselves. However, they provide the necessary foundation upon which to consider matters of higher musical interest: phrasing, dynamics, articulation, tone, balance between voices, rhythm, tempo, emotion, drama, and formal structure. The whole point of the V Gap notation system is to spend less time on fingering to free up more time for the higher level matters which truly are challenging and difficult.
Another essential category for elementary students is “Modern Piano Solos” with wonderful music by composers including Catherine Rollin, Martha Mier, Robert Vandall, Dennis Alexander, Carolyn Miller, and many others. This category also includes great jazz style piano music, especially by Martha Mier.
While enjoying piano repertoire in a variety of styles (Modern, Jazz, Pop/Rock, Classical) is the primary focus, reaching a higher level of musicianship will require attention to the various activities within music. Fortunately, inexpensive technology is available to develop essential skills including music reading, rhythm, tempo, and ear training. My favorites are TENUTO and READRHYTHM. While there's no absolute reason you can't do all of this on your own, in reality, if you want to progress most effectively, you'll almost certainly need and benefit from guidance and input from professional instruction.
Scott Camp studied jazz piano, improvisation, composition, and theory at the University of Tennessee (BA), New England Conservatory of Music (BM, MM), and the University of Iowa (doctoral studies in theory/composition). Scott was a board member and past president of the Asheville Area Piano Forum, where he taught piano lessons and also served as pianist/choir director. Scott's students' piano recital performances, as well as his own performances, are well documented on YouTube, in addition to two full length albums with wife Patsy Brison, RAIN DOWN LOVE (2013) and FOR A BETTER WORLD (2016) available on iTunes.
While teaching piano in the Asheville area from 2003-2015, Scott created the V (gap) system of notating expanded hand positions through which all piano music can be presented and learned through hand positions and finger numbers.
