Josquin des Pres (c.1450 - 1521) was one of the most influential composers of the renaissance period. All the surviving polyphonic settings of fifteenth century basse danses are based on the tenor "II Re de Spagna", known more commonly as "La Spagna". One possible explanation of this fact is that these surviving pieces are not examples of dance music as such, but rather are stylised genre pieces written in a parody style derived from the tradition of the dance musicians. - BT.
