    Difficulty Level:
  • October 20, 2010 Clarinet and BASSET Horn (not Euphonium!)

This is the first of Mendelssohn's two wonderful and charming concert pieces (op. 113 and op. 114) for clarinet in B-flat, basset horn in F, and piano. The edition by Trio di Clarone (Sabine Meyer, Wolfgang Meyer, and Reiner Wehle) is superb. Listen to Sabine Meyer's recordings...

of these pieces! This is a challenging piece, especially when played on basset horn (many low Cs, requires agility and sensitivity across the entire range). This edition comes with an alternate part for a second B-flat clarinet. There are also arrangements of this piece with either bassoon, alto sax, or horn substituting for the basset horn. Dr. David B. Wetzel Associate Professor of Clarinet Mansfield University of Pennsylvania
