Cello and piano
Composed by Max Bruch (1838-1920). Arranged by Alexander Lehmann. Classical Period. Set of performance parts. With bowings and fingerings. Opus 47. 13 pages. Published by Carl Fischer (CF.B2713).

Item Number: CF.B2713

ISBN 0825829062. 9x12 inches.

Bruch's Kol Nidrei is based on the Jewish prayer of the same name that is recited during Yom Kippur. The cello takes the melody of the hazzan chanting the liturgy in the first theme, while the second theme was inspired by an Isaac Nathan arrangement of a poem by Lord Byron. That said, the piece is quite unique, more loosely based on Jewish themes than early listeners and critics were expecting. For cello and piano.

This is one of my favourite pieces ever! It was origionaly written for cello (not violin). I have marked it as Advanced because although the notes are easy, the musical depth and maturity required could only come from a proffesional player.

This Kol Nidre was, I believe, originally written for the violin, but the cello transcription is often preferred because of the depth imparted by the larger instrument. It is often performed for Yom Kippur services and has a very Jewish feel, although Bruch was not Jewish. Excellent piece for working...

on tone and thumb position - rated level 8 by California music teachers' association (MTAC). The cello was made for pieces like this.
