Choral (SATB)
Composed by Benjamin Harlan. Shawnee Press. Choral, General Use, Lent and Sacred. 12 pages. Shawnee Press #A6836. Published by Shawnee Press (HL.35012110).

Item Number: HL.35012110

Adapted from Psalm 139, “Know My Heart” was originally written for the 1993 Louisiana Baptist All-State Youth Choir. But don't think this piece can only be used with youth; it's a beautiful SATB anthem any adult choir would be proud to sing. Psalm 139 is one of the most comforting of the Psalms and Benjamin Harlan's setting of it makes it even more meaningful. A very free and expressive a cappella section written in triplets precedes a majestic restating of the opening lines of the Psalm. Concluding with a quiet plea, “O know my heart, O God,” “Know My Heart” will be a memorable choral offering that's worth a little extra rehearsing. Outstanding.

I sang this with the Louisiana Baptist All State Youth Choir for 3 years. It was a favorite. As far a I know they still do it every year.

I sang this song with the 2004 Illinois Youth Choir. It meant a lot to me then, but even more to me now. The night after our first concert, one of my best friends found out her mom had stage 4 cancer. She asked a few of us to sing...

this song at her funeral. 1 1/2 years later, we did after Carol lost her battle with cervical cancer. This was her favorite song.

I sang this with a choir from a Presbyterian church in Omaha, NE, then later, in my own church in Evansville, Indiana, this time accompanied by piano and cello. The song brings back wonderful memories and the melody and words stir the soul.
