  • January 15, 2009 "13½ Year Old To Become Master of Joplin Music"

I've been playing from the identical Scott Joplin "King of Ragtime" music book since 1973! My nephew who is almost 14 is ready to tackle it head-on, and loves this style of music! He has already mastered the more basic versions, and says that "while he loves the...

music, it's getting a bit boring!" So I guess he's ready for a big step up, and a far greater assortment than before. Joplin's music is one of the most revolutionary of its day. While ragtime syncopations originated in Africa and was played in its earliest form on a banjo in the southern plantations of USA, Joplin was one of the first to put it on paper. He also was one of the first post civil war heros, with the ability to focus so intently on his music and style, as not to become acerbated by current racial goings-on, and so become considered a cultural icon from all sectors of the population. And from all of this, we're greeted by this wonderful book of assorted "rags"!

Great book with a good range of pieces. Nice to find arrangements that have not been dumbed-down.
