This is a distillation of Dr. Robert Pace's (Columbia University Teachers College) "comprehensive musicianship" piano method. It's best for an adult who played clarinet in high school, for example. Or one who plays by ear and must learn to read the music. The first 10 pages are equivalent...

to Theory I. For adults who haven't played in many years, dexterity will be slow to come, thus the reviews about being "advanced." So the teacher needs to be innovative. The Music for Piano series is just the opposite but does not "dumb down" but gradually integrates the same concepts. Dr. Pace's students (and teachers) achieve much more in music this way. (I am a Pace-trained teacher.)

I love Pace's method series. I'm using this for someone who has never taken lessons but taught herself some piano, and it's working great. A word to the wise: it moves very quickly, especially in music theory. However, it's great for someone with some music background...

who wants to be challenged and learn quickly.

I still consider this program way too difficult for an average adult beginner. However, the Pace curriculum now offers "Piano Plain and Simple," also for adults, which is absolutely wonderful. [Editor's note - sku for "Piano Plain and Simple" is HL.372364 ]

I cannot recommend this course for Adult Beginnners. The progression is way too rapid, leaving the student frustrated. The Music for Piano is a much better choice for all beginners using the Pace approach. There are numerous printing errors in this book as well. An errata sheet comes with the...

book. There are far too many errors to make the book practical for student use.
