The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian. 2015 Spring Forward Arrangement Contest Winner.
