Brass Quintet - Advanced Intermediate
Composed by James Lord Pierpont. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christmas. Score, Set of Parts. 20 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (S0.88301).

Item Number: S0.88301

This song was first published in 1881, with lyrics by Benjamin Hanby (who also wrote “Up on the House Top”). The melody to which “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” is usually sung was composed by James Lord Pierpont; it was this tune that Pierpont first used for his “Jingle Bells.” This arrangement begins with a fanfare-like introduction followed by a formal, “hymnlike but enthusiastic” presentation of the melody. The next section is a direct contrast, light and upbeat, turning into a variation featuring an alternative melody played by the horn. It finishes with the full ensemble, trumpet adding flourishes on top, horn and trombone providing counterpoint, and builds to a mighty close. This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 34 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at lessmith@ufl.edu. For more arrangements by Les, type the following into the sheetmusicplus Search box: Sweetwater Brass Press.
