John Mclaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (Full Scores). For Guitar (Score). Artist/Personality; Guitar Personality. Transcribed Score. Full score. 152 pages. Alfred Music #25933. Published by Alfred Music (HL.700146).

ISBN 0739042556. 9x12 inches.

John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra was the most influential band of the 1970s fusion jazz movement. Fresh from turning the jazz world upside down on Miles Davis' immortal In a Silent Way, John McLaughlin teamed with Jan Hammer, Rick Laird, Billy Cobham, and Jerry Goodman to form the Mahavishnu Orchestra, an amazing fusion of jazz, blues, rock and Indian music. This book contains John's own "miniature scores" to 28 classic Mahavishnu songs.

  • April 24, 2008 As Good As It Gets

This book has remained on my music stand ever since the day it arrived by UPS. I keep it there along with Dream Theater and Yes and Jeff Beck when I want to challenge my abilities. This is a very good book, clearly written without being bogged down by a...

bunch of jargon. It's not one of those "score" books that reproduces every stray slip of the finger. It does present the most important parts, structure and form of the songs, complete with all the odd meters, and unusual chord voicings that McLaughlin is know for. He sometimes labels a section of a song "solo" or "ad-libbed" but 98% of the the structures, forms, riffs, motifs, are practically note for note. It's some challenging stuff and definitely rewarding for those who persist. Bottom line: if you are a McLaughlin fan you will probably like this book and find it useful.
