The Jazz Connection series explore the world of jazz and its influences on many musical styles including rock 'n' roll, blues, calypso and Latin American music. Book 3 consists of seven performance pieces written for the early intermediate level student. Purpose: Book 3 corresponds with Jazzabilities Book 3. Jazzabilities is a series that helps build a jazz vocabulary through short exercises and performance pieces. Jazz Connections reinforces this vocabulary through these entertaining pieces. Suggestions for Instruction: Students who haven't studied jazz will still recognize many of the rhythms and hand positions used in this book. However, triplets and swing-8ths are used extensively throughout. Patience must be applied to make sure these rhythms are learned accurately. Level of difficulty corresponds to about Grade 7 of the RCM method from Canada and Grade 5 of the Trinity method from London, England. As students will be required to swing 8th notes for most of the songs, I would recommend some prior experience in simpler songs with swung 8th...

notes if this book is going to be the first time a student plays jazz. I advise choosing this option of ONLY buying the book and not the corresponding CD, as the CD has a fake-sounding orchestral track of cheap Midi quality, and worse, all tracks have a Midi piano playing along, so the student never has the chance to be the only piano sound. This was disappointing, but may be of value to those who would benefit from constantly hearing the piano if jazz is a completely new genre. On an added note, the CD that corresponds with Baumgartner's Christmas book has corrected this, each song having a second track without piano sound so that the student CAN be the only piano sound.
