I purchased this book thinking I was getting a collection of mellow traditional swing arrangements. Not really. Arranger Frank Mantooth seems to have a penchant for Salsa and Latin flavored arrangements, which is completely unappealing to my personal tastes. Many of the non-latin arrangements are simple, grade-school Christmas...

receital level pieces that really don't stand on their own. The remaining few pieces are arranged in a New Age, David Lanz-esqe style, but with an occasional obligatory 9th chord thrown in to remind you, "Oh yeah, this is supposed to be jazz...". Without question, Vince Guaraldi's 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' is still the gold-standard for Christmas jazz piano in my opinion. Frank Mantooth's book doesn't hold a proverbial Christmas candle to it. If you like salsa and latin arrangements, buy the book. If not, keep searching, just as I am currently doing.
