Although Johann Sebastian Bach did not write any music for the guitar, transcriptions of his unaccompanied string music and music for lute have long been a part of the guitar repertoire. Despite the respect that this music commands among musicians and audiences debate still exists as to what constitutes an appropriate means of transcribing, interpreting and performing this music on the guitar. It is this debate that prompted this long-awaited edition of Bach's unaccompanied cello suites by scholar and concert guitarists Stanley Yates. This definitive work includes performance scores, comparison scores an an invaluable 40-page guide entitled Arranging, Interpreting, and Performing the Music of J.S. Bach. Furthermore, the author offers comments on his arranging process and suggestions on using this edition including: ornamentation, slurs, fingerings, notation, and implementation of the comparison scores. Written in standard notation in guitar-friendly keys.

Didn't know that the keys would be different from the Duarte versions. The keys don't sound as good to me as Duartes but some of the pieces are a little easier to play.

Dear reviewers, please learn to be specific, otherwise your posts are useless. For examaple, one poster says, these transcriptions are easier than Duarte's. In what goddamn way are they easier? Just BS'ing they're easier doesn't cut it, we need to know why, otherwise it's just...

an unsupported opinion, and who knows, maybe the publisher's employee trying to move the stuff. Learn to be specific dears. Thank you.

Yates seems to have done a very scholarly job in these trancriptions, and they're a little easier to play then Duarte's edittions, but I do miss some of the added voices and different keys of some of the other versions at times. But a very good set..!

  • March 10, 2007 Thank you, Dr. Yates

I highly recommend this transcription of the Bach cello suites for classical guitar. For years I've been jealous that cello players had these profound suites for developing technique and musicianship. This collection provides the classical guitarist entry to that world.
