  • February 17, 2012 Interesting edition.

I learnt this piece using the Peters Edition, but I find this version interesting, as the editor has recorded the piece. His editorial additions are quite extensive, and he includes pedal markings -which I assume correspond with his recording. For anyone studying this piece for competitions or concerts, I would...

recommend the Peters Edition as a reference, but this version is also worth buying. It's fascinating to see how different editors handle technical details such as fingerings and pedal markings.

This piece is Amazing! Balakirev wrote different variations of this piece but this edition by far is the best. The fingering is flawless and notes by the editor make this piece attain-able...you want a great concert piece...pick this one up

Well let's not beat about the bush. This is a tough score to play. I am a reasonably talented amateur but I do not expect ever to be able to present this piece at a concert. I just wanted to see what it looked like. Islamey deserves its reputation...

as one of the hardest pieces in the repertoire but for me, with only medium sized hands that become tense when the going is tough, there are quite a few pieces that I'd consider harder. Schumann's Toccata for instance. I was pleasantly surprised that there is quite a bit of Islamey which I think I will be able to learn to some extent. The beautiful lyrical theme in the middle for instance. So I'd say, if you are a good amateur who can sometimes bear not to have everything perfect, then don't be scared of the reputation of this piece.

  • February 06, 2003 Islamey = Everest!

I first heard 'Islamey' on a player piano years ago, and three decades later, I decided to accept the challenge (I'm glad I waited!). Chaloff's edition is nicely done, and comes with many useful fingerings (be prepared, however, to work out your own at times - every person's...

hands are different). I'd recommend taking 6-12 months to memorize the score, and then another 2-5 years to practice it thoroughly. It's an extremely difficult piece, but learning it is a commensurately rewarding experience!
