I was born in Iowa but the family only stayed a few months. Years later I went back to visit to get a feeling of where I was born. I was struck by the wide open spaces and the cold (since it was December) but also by the warmth of the people. When the french saxophone virtuoso, Daniel Kientzy, asked me for a concerto grosso for several instruments I decided to portray my impressions as a piece of music. For the premiere, the bassoon and horns were in the rear balcony and the percussionists were halfway with one on each side. The saxophone, trumpet and trombone were on the stage. Other spatial layouts are possible.
