  • May 01, 2011 Great book to own

Every pianist should own Bach's inventions. I prefer the Henle Verlag edition but this one is nonetheless great to own.

Thanks for this great combo of inventions and sinfonias. It has great notes in front before the music. Binding allows flat placement.

  • May 11, 2007 Bach Inventions inventively presented

This collection is really special. It was hard to find a complete set of the inventions in sheet music, which I wanted to give as a birthday gift. So to find the inventions along with the sinfonias was a good surprise. It's been several years since either of us...

played piano--as soon as I saw the book online, I knew it was the one to get. I wasn't disappointed, the book itself was chock full of useful and interesting musical and historical annotations that musicians and music lovers alike will really appreciate. Great item! I'd be interested in Palmer's other books. And of course the Alfred Publishing name has been around awhile.

  • July 13, 2006 Excellent - Useful and Interesting

This book contains all 15 Inventions and all 15 Sinfonias in flawless print quality. Also, there is a large section explaining the history of the pieces contained in the book and variations contained in another autograph by Bach.

  • May 23, 2006 The best edition of the best music

I am a piano performer and teacher. My students and I have this well-researched and informative edition. I also have and recommend the Alfred edition of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. They teach about how to play the music of Bach's time, including tasteful ornamentation. They contain Bach...

's table of ornaments, explaining it in detail. I am sure that many students appreciate the fingering and dynamic suggestions of the editor as well. The editor makes it very clear what is from him and what is from Bach, but I sometimes find his additions distracting, so I prefer to have, in addition to these Alfred editions, a score without the editor's fingering and dynamics written in, such as those published by Dover or Henle. But the performance suggestions and scholarly insights in the Alfred edition still make it very valuable to me. I feel that it is the best edition to introduce intermediate students to Bach.
