    Difficulty Level:
  • March 14, 2014 I Discovered Something

I discovered something about this edition that makes it the best choice out there: all the right hand notes are on the top staff, and all the left hand notes are on the bottom staff. That makes playing these pieces MUCH easier! Most of the urtext editions end up being...

pretty much the same: correct notes without additions that were not put there by Bach. That is what any edition should give us, and this one does that. But it gets confusing to students when notes are written on the top staff but played by the left hand, or vice versa. This edition makes learning several of the inventions happen much faster, making this version worth buying just for that reason. And it is a reliable edition that has been recognized by scholars for years.

  • December 14, 2009 Great Urtext and Not Too Expensive

I usually use the Henle edition, but I had a student who needed to keep the price reasonable. I tried this urtext edition as an alternative. Boy am I glad I did! This edition is just as reliable as the more expensive editions, and the fingering is sensible for average...

students. I have started to use this edition for all of my students, unless the student can easily afford the more expensive editions. I would classify this as a "best value for the money" edition. Thanks, Peters.
