I discovered something about this edition that makes it the best choice out there: all the right hand notes are on the top staff, and all the left hand notes are on the bottom staff. That makes playing these pieces MUCH easier! Most of the urtext editions end up being...

pretty much the same: correct notes without additions that were not put there by Bach. That is what any edition should give us, and this one does that. But it gets confusing to students when notes are written on the top staff but played by the left hand, or vice versa. This edition makes learning several of the inventions happen much faster, making this version worth buying just for that reason. And it is a reliable edition that has been recognized by scholars for years.

  • June 06, 2011 Best Urtext with Best Notation

Urtext means that only what the composer actually wrote is included in the edition; no dynamics or phrase marks have been added. This edition does all of that flawlessly. There is one feature that makes this edition the best: all notes for the right hand are notated on the upper...

staff, and all notes for the left hand are on the lower staff. That is not true of any other urtext edition I know of.

  • December 06, 2009 Good Alternative to the Expensive Urtexts

I firmly believe in using an urtext edition of Bach, but one that is user-friendly, with fingering, and one that doesn't cost next year's lunch for all 52 weeks! This edition fits the bill. I find this edition to be just as reliable as many of the...

more expensive editions, such as Henle and Barenreiter. It has good fingering suggestions, which students at this level need. There are no added phrase marks or other editorial additions. But the nice feature is that the price is about 2/3 of the standard urtext versions. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative but still want an authentic edition, this one is a great choice.
