Sondheims work has paid off, not only his amazing songs in 'Sweeney Todd', but now he raised the bar in 'Into the Wodds'. The Plot is a very thick one, though it wasn't complicated enough, making only one fairy tale tie with the others. The vocal scores are great...

, yet not the best book for pianists. I recommend this to all vocal singers...

I was really pleased with this book because it has all of the music pieces from the 1987 Original Broadway Show that was filmed on DVD. But most of the pieces are very hard to play. There's at least two or three songs that a beginner could play but...

it all depends on how fast you pick things up and where you are in lessons.

Into the woods is a fun yet advanced score. It is a great buy and has so many good songs. This is a great musical that teaches so many valuable life lessons through fairy tales and sometimes things dont allways end happily ever after.

Although this is the "composer's piano copy" of the score, there are actually very few musical discrepancies. Left out of this score are rolled chords in the beginnings of "A Very Nice Prince" and "On the Steps of the Palace", all trills, flute and string parts of "Any Moment...

", and a small horn part in "Moments in the Woods". The only things I did not like about this score were that it ends singing in "A Very Nice Prince" before the Baker's Wife's singing part, and it leaves out the bridge in "Any Moment" ("Days are made of moments..."). Other than that, everything seems to be there. There are many instances where extra staves are added to make sure that every part of the full score accompaniment is included (usually resulting in 4 lines of piano accompaniment).

The piano accompaniment is very difficult- even an advanced pianist will need to put some work into it. All of the songs have difficult rhythms. Some songs (especially those of the Witch) are in keys with 6 or 7 flats and/or are loaded with double-flats, so it can...

be a little confusing to remember which notes are flatted. There are also TONS and TONS of huge chords (very dense and/or far-spread chords) in both hands. Many songs have 3 or 4 staves of accompaniment, but sometimes even just 2 are virtually impossible to play with only two hands because of how much music is there. But what ever challenge this score brings to the performer, it will be worth the effort because this score is full of incredible and beautiful songs and is one of the best in all of musical theatre.
