His life was itself spectacular, marked by the changes which were happening in the young nation. It was a country of masters and slaves, a nation being built, present both in the romantic dream of Il Guarany - where native Indians and European whites are united in a love story - and in the abolitionism of Lo Schiavo - where an idealized country, free from oppression, is portrayed.
