Violin. Edited by Judi Gowe. String - (Suzuki) Supplementary; Suzuki. Suzuki Method Supplement. Instructional and Method. Instructional book. 112 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.0439).

Item Number: AP.0439
ISBN 0874874394. Instructional and Method. 9x12 inches.

These easy-to-read, progressive exercises by Joanne Martin develop a student's reading skills one stage at a time, with many repetitions at each stage. I CAN READ MUSIC is designed as a first note-reading book for students of string instruments who have learned to play using an aural approach such as the Suzuki Method, or for traditionally taught students who need extra note reading practice. Its presentation of new ideas is clear enough that it can be used daily at home by quite young children and their parents, with the teacher checking progress every week or two.

I have used this book for years, and I think it is GREAT! There are 5 lines of Notes/Pitch and 5 lines of Rhythm for each lesson. The book is laid out in a very logical order. The print is large and easy to read for students of all...

ages. My students love to count the rhythms before they play them. I would highly recommend this book to any student learning to read music at any age!

  • January 05, 2007 Excellent Reading and Rhythm Supplement

Format is large notes, with 5 lines of note reading (starts with open A- 1st finger B) in various combinations. The opposing page is straight rhythm patterns all on one string. The pace is excellent, and progresses in the first book to all strings, with accidentals. Meters include 2/4...

, 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4. It introduces 6/8, with tied and dotted rhythms toward the end of the 1st book. The note values are whole note through sixteenths, in all combinations. Valuable reading work, even for students trained in traditional methods.

  • June 21, 2006 Perfect for all, even note-readers

I use this book for almost all of my beginners, who all read notes. I have torn off the cover because the title is a bit misleading. Each "note" lesson is paired with a rhythm lesson, including 5/4 time and more interesting tied values. Lessons are sequential and build...

upon each other; also there is an index in the front so you can find exercises for whichever string, at a glance. It's also great for the first lesson with a student, to gauge where they're at. And IMHO the cleanliness of the page and large note heads adds a certain calmness to practicing.
