Larry Clark brings young orchestra players an accessible piece that combines elements of Japanese Folk music and canonic style. The piece is beautifully lyrical and features a gentle pizzicato section.

About the Composition Japan has some of the most beautiful mountains in all the world. Mt. Hotaka is the tallest mountain in the Kamikochi region in an area known as the Japan Alps. One of the most beautiful sceneries is the Kappa Bridge that is over the Azusa River. It flows down from one of the mountains in this region. This piece is written to depict the serene and beautiful sunset around Mt. Hotaka. The pentatonic scale is used as the basis for the melodic material. This is an original melody, but it contains the flavor of many Japanese folk songs. This melody is written to be played as a canon or round and it is suggested that the whole orchestra rehearse the melody together first to understand the flow and shape of the melodic line. The piece begins with a drone sound followed by the first statment of the melody by the 1st violins followed by two more statements of the melody; once in two-part round and once in a three-part round. This is followed by the B section of the piece by the full ensemble. The round returns with the lower strings taking the lead, which leads to the C section of the piece with elongated rhythms. The A theme returns in a pizzicato presentation followed again by the B and then immediately the C material. The piece is completed with a short Coda. There are opportunities for the young string player to play some simple double stops where at least one of the notes is played on an open string. Please feel free to adjust the tempo or bowings to fit your teaching needs.
