Hoquetus David - Score and parts composed by Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377). For 3 instruments. Miscellaneous Music. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPM0204).

This isorhythmic work uses a tenor derived from the famous Alleluia Nativitas ascribed to Perotin, and may have been originally intended to be used as part of that work. In the tenor there are four statements of the melody (numbered with arable numerals) in two isorhythmic sections (A and B); the talae (isorhythmic units) are numbered with Roman numerals. It is questionable whether this is an instrumental work as such. However, its highly abstract nature makes it very suitable for instruments. According to Gilbert Reaney (Machaut article in The New Grove, this work is in the same tradition as the several In seculum settings in the Bamberg Codex (13th century - see EML 173). - BT.
