Franz Josef haydn's beautiful Concerto in C major for Violoncello and orchestra is a treat as well as an absolute requirement for any serious cellist. Strangely, though, it lay dormant and unknown in a Prague library until it was dicovered in 1961 and brought to light after nearly two hundred years! Since its reintroduction it has become one of the most popular of all violoncello concerti, and deservedly so. This concerto was most likely written in the mid-1760s while Haydn was Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy. Its splendid, memorable themes perfectly showcase the solo instrument against a beautifully and sensitively orchestrated backdrop, all of which come together to illustrate Papa Haydn's mastery of form, melody and orchestration. Its lovely classical charm, beautifully captured here by virtuoso roman Wiszniowski and the Plovdiv Philharmonic, will enchant you from beginning to end. Then play it yourself with maestro Todorov and the Plovdiv Philharmonic as your accompanists! This MMO learning and performance edition of one of the great classical cello masterpieces is not to be missed!

The MMO editions are great for people who need to learn a new concerto and need to get the feeling what it would be like with an orchestra. This particular one, the Haydn concerto in C, unfortunately is a little slow - eighth notes = 126 - which nobody plays anymore. And the...

orchestra phrasing is very old style... Still, good exercise!

As an adult amateur who has only played a solo piece once with an orchestra, this makes working on a piece not only more rewarding but more challenging as well. I am actually performing with the MMO CD as crazy as that sounds! Not easy since the orchestra is not...

following me, but a great way to gain some self-improvement. My only complaint is that the music as provided is not suitable for performance. They have page turns in the middle of a run. I have seen this with other MMO music scores. If you need to use their music it must be copied. Fortunately, I have the Haydn music from 30 years ago which works fine. MMO is a great way to work on a piece and really polish it up.
