  • April 09, 2009 one of the best bass methods I've ever seen

For possible future use with my students I ordered this method by Ed Friedland. I must say, never before with other methods had I so much fun when I played through all the 3 parts of this book! It comprises many styles of bass lines, including Rock, Country, Blues, Shuffle...

, Jazz, Swing, Latin, Waltz, Reggae, Funk, Russian and Gypsy. The book comes with 3 CDs played by a real band, not just MIDI. It is written very well built up pedagogically, step by step for a beginner up to an intermediate/advanced level. The necessary theoretical musical knowledge is also explained quite easily to understand. Though it's always best to have a teacher it could be of good use to work as a self instructor. I advised my students to buy the book and they just love it! The price is reasonable, it can also be used for study on the upright bass. Thanks, Ed!

    Difficulty Level:
  • August 31, 2008 Great Set of Books

Pro's: This is actually all three levels bound together. I am a beginner at Bass but play the Saxophone. One of the main reasons I selected this set was the way it teaches you the Bass. A very logical, systematic approach to the Bass while teaching you how to...

read notes, not TABs (though TAB's are gone over). As with any instrument it is always wise to have an instructor. But this set is extremely well written, you work at your pace, review before going on, is very informative, and can be used as a reference at whatever level your at. It is well worth the money. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to play a Bass. Con's: The only area I think could be improved on is adding at what speed the music should be played. Of course you start slow and work up to speed but it doesn't let you know what the speed should be. I have the set without the CD's. If I had bought the set with the CD's this would not be an issue.
