Composed by Ozzie Kotani with Dennis Ladd. Saddle-stitched, Methods. Hawaiian. Book/CD Set. 76 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.99263BCD).

Item Number: MB.99263BCD

ISBN 9780786658930. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

Written by a master of Hawaiian slack-key guitar, this text teaches the history, tunings, and other techniques found in slack-key guitar music. Because of the altered tunings in slack-key guitar music, all of the examples and exercises in this text have been written in tab only. Topics discussed are: right and left hand technique, alternating bass, slides, pull-offs, hammering, harmonics, and other slack-key related topics. Recordings of nine exercises from the book which demonstrates these techniques (with tunings) are provided on an accompanying CD. Beautiful black and white photos of native Hawaiian musicians are scattered throughout the text.

In my opinion the best method to get into slack key guitar. Clear, detailled explanations, excellent suggestions for how to execute the elements, well graduated from step to step. Great - thank you!

this book carries with it one of the main problems of Melbay's books nowadays, unlike their older titles, namely that the pieces are TOO LONG. nobody needs to learn all the variations on the theme. i make it a rule that my students learn nothing over a page in...

length. students just need the basics of slack key not everything to the minute detail. unfortunately, the publishing companies have created "TAB monkeys" who play exactly whatever is written and think they have real skill.
