    Boston, MA
    Difficulty Level:
  • May 07, 2011 Joe Diorio's in Depth Look at Giant Steps

This book is an intimate look at Joe's approach to playing the Coltrane classic Giant Steps. It is not a look into Coltrane's approach (please see John Coltrane Plays Coltrane Changes by Masaya Yamaguchi (in C) and John Coltrane Plays Giant Steps by David Dempsey (in Bb) for...

note for note transcriptions and Countdown to Giant Steps by Andy LaVerne for graded play along recordings and exercises), but rather a modern look into the Coltrane classic using quartal/quintal intervals and great chord/melody ideas - while not for the beginner, it is a wonderful source for new approaches and ideas for the guitarist (as well as all instruments) to play Giant Steps. Included are complete solos (each spotlighting different techniques, such as unison notes, triplets, fourths/fifths) ii-V-I lines, how to memorize the piece, reharmonizing and walking bass lines. Joe Diorio’s book on Giant Steps, while challenging, is worth the time to master and is highly recommended.

First off, if Anonymous from NJ wants a transcription of Trane's solos, he should transcribe some himself. It would be good for his ears and brain. I'm a sax player who endured too many jams, struggling and lurching thru the tune. A git. player loaned me the book...

. I love it and will buy it. I like the variety of rhythmic practice approaches.I will tuck the book into my toolkit, along w/my personal Trane transcriptions, of course. Bravo, Joe! ((I really rate the book as beginner thru advanced -- use it at the "level" you're at. BB

    Difficulty Level:
  • October 12, 2004 Waste of money

After buying this online I figured I would actually have a transcription to learn how to PLAY giant steps. all the things in this book are just exercises in voice leading around the chord progression used in giant steps, not the solos Coltrane played. Save your money and buy something...
