    London, Great Britain
    Difficulty Level:
  • March 13, 2009 An unfortunately truncated arrangement

Those who know the magnificent aria "Ich ging zu ihm" from Korngold's opera "Das Wunder der Heliane" might well expect this arrangement by the composer to reproduce the aria in its stunning entirety. Unfortunately, the arrangement omits the first half of the aria and starts midway, leaving one feeling...

rather short-changed and altering the dramatic balance of the piece. The violin part initially follows the original vocal line but towards the latter half of the arrangement moves an octave above the vocal part and stays there. As a display piece for the violin, this has its advantages but it loses much of the pathos that the original soprano part has when the voice drops over an octave on the last beat of measure 25 before beginning the final ecstatic section. The violinist may wish to make this change and exploit the lower register and see if it is more musically satisfying. The piano part would suit a pianist with large hands but is otherwise not especially difficult.

I thought I was getting a voice and piano version, but I can spend a bit of time adding the text to the violin line from a libretto.
