G. Schirmer American Aria Anthology

Soprano. Edited by Richard Walters. Vocal Collection. 280 pages. Published by G. Schirmer (HL.50484623).

Item Number: HL.50484623
ISBN 0634044745. 9x12 inches.

This landmark series collects compelling, useful, singer-friendly arias from a distinctly American opera tradition. Each volume includes information about every opera and an aria plot note. A majority of the music in the four volumes has never before been available outside of the opera vocal scores, and some arias in the series have never been in print at all before now. Most arias are appropriate for college-level singers. Composers such as Samuel Barber, William Bolcom, Douglas Moore, Virgil Thomson and Gian Carlo Menotti are well represented. Additionally, arias are included from important works such as Regina, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Ghosts of Versailles, The Great Gatsby, Little Women and many others. Stephen Sondheim graciously agreed to adapt new aria editions of two pieces from Sweeney Todd for the series: “The Contest” in the Tenor volume and “Epiphany” in the Baritone/Bass edition.

A great book! They have all the great American arias, except the ones from Susannah (Floyd)... A must!

This is a great group of American Arias. The only downside is that Schirmer didn't include Floyd's Susannah (copyright issues?) so if you're looking for those arias, you need to pick up Phillip Brunelle's collection. Also missing Anne Truelove's aria from Rake's Progress.

When i first got this fantastic book I didn't even know how much beautiful music it contains. Living in Serbia, I've never heard on stage some American opera, but as I student I'll certenly try that people trough my performance become aware of new trends in world...

music and the best way to do this is to sing some of those sparkling soprano airs from Schirmer's Anthology. Beautiful and smart selection form all sopranos in the world!
