  • November 14, 2007 Review of The French Harpsichordists

Two beautiful pieces by Chambonnieres were Gaillarde and La Verdinguette. The editor rewrote some of the early French ornaments to make the music easier to read for pianists. The harpsichord style was preserved without piano pedal markings and Italian words. The Sarabande by Destouches was slow and gripping. The Passacaille...

by Lalande possessed an engaging grand beginning and end. The Rondeau by Marais was wonderful. The pieces, Gavotte en Rondeau and Le Carnaval, by Lulli did not represent his excellence as a famous opera and ballet composer. The ones by La Villeroy and Duphly were challenging and delightful. Royer composed La Sensible, a four-page beautiful piece. I could take out this book to play for an audience, as it contains a variety of rhythms and styles, but I'll photocopy some of my favorites for performance, and keep the book free of markings so I can offer unmarked pieces to my harpsichord students.
