Between his great song cycles Die schone Mullerin and Winterreise, in addition to writing the famous Gondelfahrer and Nachthelle for vocal ensemble, Schubert composed his a cappella quartets of Op. 64, which is a veritable cycle of vocal chamber music. In the works presented on this CD, based on poems by friends from within his literary circle (Mayrhofer, Seidl, Grillparzer), Schubert defined vocal chamber music as an independent genre. This exciting group of works is performed by the men's quartet Schubert hoch vier, which is comprised of internationally recognized Lied interpreters, accompanied by the Schubert specialist and pianist Thomas Seyboldt. Together the musicians achieve a masterful balance between the spirit of ensemble and expressive solo singing.
