  • January 23, 2009 A Chromatic Harmonica Gem

Finding original music for chromatic harmonica isn't easy. Gordon Jacob's "Five Pieces in the Form of a Suite" is a real gem. Two of the movements, "Cradle Song" and Threnody," are accessible to an intermediate player; the other three movements require more skill. There are some passages that...

are idiomatic to harmonica, such as an occasional chord; but mostly it's just good, tuneful writing. The piano accompaniment for the two slow movements appears to be accessible by an intermediate player. This is a quality publication, with clearly printed music. Another piece from that same era, the 1950s, that works for chromatic harmonica, is Ernest Bloch's "Suite Modale for Flute and Piano." Again, two movements work well for the intermediate player, with two more challenging ones. The piano accompaniment is more demanding, however.
