Ulvi Cemal Erkin (1906-1972) was one of the first generation of Turkish composers of Western music known as the "Turkish Five." (Turkish citizens of the new Republic adopted surnames in the 1920s and 30s. This piece composed in 1931 does not yet show his chosen surname, Erkin.) These short pieces demonstrate modal and rhythmic elements typical of Turkish music and are excellent teaching pieces for the intermediate pianist. 10 pp. The audio example is of Nos. 2 & 3.
