It has such widely varied terrain, from deep forests, to impassable valleys and canyons, to the savannahs of the southern tip to the deserts of the North. Here are five pieces that aspire to capture just a bit of the color, mystery, natural beauty and sometimes forbidding nature of the various landscapes. Saharan Sirocco, a hot desert wind, Drums and a Song, a black-key percussive and melodic item, Beneath the Congo Canopy, dark chords and a haunting melody. The Cape of Good Hope, in a Storm brings us an ostinato that represents the unchanging nature of well, Nature! Yet, the seas around the Cape are only stormy for a short season, and the dynamics, diminished harmony, and metric modulations paint the picture of a storm, with all the rollicking and panic that must accompany any sailor going 'round the Bend. The suite ends with a tribute to the majesty and grandeur of the continent's central Rift Valley. The audio clip is of Saharan Sirocco. The suite can be performed as individual titles, or as a unit, and in no particular order. The sequence makes sense as it moves through various moods, but is not by any means the only way to program it. Pedaling is at the discretion of the player or teacher.
