First Lessons Dulcimer

First Lessons Dulcimer (DAD Tuning). Composed by Joyce Ochs. For Dulcimer (Mountain). Saddle-stitched, Methods. First Lessons. Acoustic Music. Beginning. Book/CD Set. 32 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.98388BCD).

ISBN 9780786650910. Acoustic Music. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

This instruction book for beginning lap dulcimer in DAD tuning is unique in two ways. First, it instructs the beginning student in the increasingly popular DAD tuning. Secondly, the author, a classroom music teacher, has carefully and systematically layered the lessons to guide the student through familiar songs while teaching skills and musical concepts. This not only enables the student to enjoy the lap dulcimer but also enhances total music understanding and participation. The accompanying CD provides instructional dialogue and demonstrations of the techniques and songs included in the book. Additional hints and exercises are presented in an inviting and encouraging conversational text.

  • September 24, 2008 Fine Beginning Mountain Dulcimer Book

I am brand new to the mountain dulcimer. There is no one near that can help me. I have found this book to be very useful in getting me started. I am able to play many tunes now.

As a total beginner, I am SO pleased to be able to understand music notation for the first time, thanks to this book. I come from a musical family, but have only ever played by ear as a child. As the notes had made no sense to me, I kept...

away from music - except to listen. Then a friend showed me his dulcimer and I fell in love with it. Now I play (still not very well, but not too badly either) every morning and get so much pleasure from it - all thanks to the beginners book I bought from you. The familiarity of the songs helps a lot too. Thank You. I also have to say that I have arthritis in my hands, but after trying to get to grips with the fingering, the spread of my left hand is now greater than my right! Great stuff.
