It is most interesting to know that nowadays the recorder has more admirers than ever before. Especially the treble recorder is most suited to be played in the home circle. There exists a lot of music for this particular instrument already, mainly of the period from Bach to Mozart. The works of the great masters during the above mentioned period, such as Bach, Handel, Telemann, Mattheson, etc., require a high technical proficiency. The object of this booklet is to familiarize the player with this technical proficiency, by means of special exercises.

See my review of Rooda's "95 Dexterity Exercises and Dances for Recorders in C." This book has the same exercises and compositions as the one in C (only pitched for the F-recorders). Wonderful! I use it every day.

I have played the soprano recorder off and on (mostly off until 2007) for 50 years. I just started on the alto recorder in October of 2007. I like these exercises, which really are graded in difficulty from beginner to advanced. This is a good way to progress after one...

has finished the basic instruction books. My only criticism -- and it is mild -- of the book is that to keep down the size and cost, the exercises are only in selected keys. Rooda favored the keys with flats, not really a surprise as this book is for F instruments, and the keys of G and C. Part of what we need, though, is to see more exercises with sharps. But as I said, that's a mild criticism. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to advance on his/her sopranino, alto, or bass recorder.
