The demand for literature in Spanish is a reflection of our changing American culture. Here are twelve songs, in two keys, that can serve as an introduction to art songs in Spanish for a voice student. International Phonetic Alphabet is included for each song text, as are translations for study. Laura Ward has recorded wonderful, informed piano accompaniments on the companion CD. Before the accompaniment, a excellently instructive pronunciation lesson, recorded by a native Spanish speaker (a university Spanish professor) is heard. The songs are by Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados and Fernando Obradors, with an additional two Mexican folksong arrangements. A beautiful Velasquez painting is seen on the cover.

I'm currently a vocal major in college, having purchased this book in my 12th grade year. It is one of my favorite books out of The Vocal Library's collection. For those who are not fluent in Spanish, there is written translation, as well as an audio track of...

pronunciation, for every song. It's a great investment for any budding vocalist.

A very attractive selection of Spanish Art Songs, complete with a CD of pronunciation and piano accompaniments. It is just slightly perverse that the pronunciations given are South American Spanish when all the composers are from European Spain.
