The English composer Muriel Herbert (1897-1984) composed her song ‘Faintheart in a railway train’ in or after 1925, when she first met her future husband, Emile Delavenay, to whom it is dedicated. It has not been published until now, and has been newly edited from the autograph manuscript, now held in the British Library. The words come from Thomas Hardy’s poem ‘Faintheart in a railway train’, which was first published in his Late Lyrics and Earlier, Macmillan, London (1922).
