Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm by Randall Hartsell. For Piano. Piano Solo; Solo. Intermediate. Sheet. 4 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.18168).

This intermediate piano solo begins with a swirling, rising right-hand melody that falls on a descending scale. The middle section, marked dolce, is a peaceful interlude before the return of the stormy first theme. Dynamics and phrasing are stressed in this piece by Randall Hartsell in the key of A minor.

  • April 30, 2013 A fine teaching piece

The Eye of the Storm by Randall Hartsell has become a teaching staple in my studio alongside Morning at Spring Meadow and The Great Escape by the same composer. Students enjoy sounding amazing, playing patterns and scales all over the keyboard. This piece has a clear ABA form, whose B...

section has a LH Alberti bass under a singing RH, which is perfect for teaching tonal balance and connecting pedaling. The minor key and warm full pedal sound makes this serve equally well as an étude or an ever popular recital piece. It does not have very much in the way of musical complexity, so there is a danger or students getting addicted to Hartsell's almost pop-romantic style, and spoiled for Haydn or Bach which can sometimes sound not so thrilling to the untrained ear yet is often far more complex! Probably most people would rate this intermediate. It is a good first "intermediate" level piece. Maybe it could almost be rated early intermediate.

  • August 06, 2009 A very pretty song

Learned this song as a much younger pianist, my teacher had me play it for a concert. It's a beautiful song, with an up pace tempo and moderately difficult fingering.
