Exercises and Etudes for the Jazz Instrumentalist is a collection of original pieces by master trombonist/composer J.J. Johnson. Designed as study material and playable by any instrument, these pieces (the harmonies of which are based on well-known standards) run the gamut of the jazz experience, featuring common and uncommon time signatures and keys, and styles from ballads to funk. They are progressively graded so that both beginners and professionals will be challenged by the demands of this wonderful music. Published in both treble and bass clef editions, this book also includes text to guide the player, as well as a biography of Johnson.

I really like this book. It has tons of challenging pieces to play but also a few simple ones to get you going. There are also several melodic exercises in the front which come in very handy. However, I wish the book came with a CD for at least the...

melodic exercises because I've just graduated from high school and still have some rhythms that are tricky for me to play, and without a CD it's really hard for me to know if I'm playing it right because I don't have a teacher to ask for help anymore. Other than that it's a great book and I would recommend it for upper level high school jazz bands or people who just like to play on their own.

Must be able to play in the higher register, but good riffs.

This is a wonderful book on learning to improvise with the stress falling on melodic interpretation. Unencumbered by the chord symbols found in most improv. instruction books; J.J.'s technique is to make the player so familiar with their instrument and various rhythm patterns that "composing on the fly...

" comes as natural as humming. A great book by a great trombonist!

This book is probably the best book for advanced trombone players who want a challenge!! It is also great for beginners as well. The etudes help you build your performance on the trombone greatly and this book also helps you read quickly especially in the high registers (up to E...

flat!) This book also offers you a chance to read in treble clef for those who mostly read in bass clef. This book has helped me achieve outstanding trombone awards and trophies at state competitions for jazz. Without this book, I wouldn't be as successful in Jazz at all.
