A fine example of solid, intelligent composing, firmly in the middle-of-the-road tradition of post-war piano music; quasi-tonal, but with dissonance as a driving element (the work is based on the derivatives of a minor 2nd). Stylistically, it owes something to Copland and Prokofiev: sinewy, ice...

-clear and immensely idiomatic textures, with a wonderful feel for sonorities and with immensely exciting rhythmic drive. It makes big technical demands, but nothing which cannot be achieved with steady, disciplined practice and the work "sits" well. I prepared and played it ten years ago and recently took it up again: everything was still there. For students it makes an ideal choice for a final recital at postgraduate level; for professionals, an ideal choice in programming 20th century music where there needs to be accessibility. In my experience the work goes well even with a conservative audience. Hugely rewarding to play and an absolutely central choice in repertoire.
