Essential Styles, Books 1 and 2 are two innovative book and play-along CD packages that teach 50 essential grooves from today's jazz and popular styles. The books include written-out charts of each selection and performance tips for both drums and bass. All of the grooves have been recorded with a rhythm section and woodwinds, with drums mixed on the left channel and bass on the right, so either instrument may be dialed out. In addition, many of the tracks contain open choruses of comping so any instrument can practice playing solos! Essential Styles emphasizes the most important aspects of solid group playing---locking-in between the drummer and bassist--- providing a strong rhythmic foundation and creating an authentic feel for whatever the style demands.

This title has a good cross section of styles and is good for expanding horizons. The music itself gets a little difficult which is why i call it a reader's book because your reading skills have to pretty keen to catch everything it has to offer. The CD would...

be much more of a comodity if i knew of somewhere to get a system that i can dial out sound, your suppose to be able to just play the bass and the accompnyment but i havent seen a dial capable system in years. All in all it's a very good book and is great for students to just have whenever they are faced with anew style. Most of the time you problably shouldn't even play the styles for badem, you can use it as a basis for the styles.

  • December 16, 2007 Excellent book

This is a truly well written book that stands out above other similar CD playalongs. It covers most of the basic styles and comes with a beautifully recorded CD. Some playalongs are naff but this is Slick and most importantly it is alot of fun to learn with.

This book offers an interesting selection of music. Having the cd to listen to as you are playing is very helpful. My son's instructor thinks this book is the best!
