Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.808655

Composed by Edward Elgar, Giuseppe Verdi, Luders, Mendelsohn, Metz, and Richard Wagner. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1910631. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808655).

Composed especially for graduation ceremonies, this processional piece comprises a number of melodies traditionally associated with things academic. It opens with a fanfare-like introduction based on Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, followed by a 4/4 version of the melodic paean to university life from Gustave Luders’ "The Prince of Pilsen." Next come two themes frequently used as ceremonial processional marches, "Grand March" from Verdi’s Aida and "War March of the Priests" from Mendelsohn’s Athalia. The tempo then slows slightly and the dynamics soften with, first, Theodore August Metz’ "Hot Time in the Old Town" (a tune several schools have adopted as their own) and, second, a more refined and extended version of Pomp and Circumstance. Finally, a segment of "Grand March" from Wagner’s Tannhäuser picks up the beat and leads into the ultimate academic tune, "Gaudeamus Igitur," which concludes the processional. The arrangement includes two optional cuts.

Completed in 2016, this arrangement runs about 8 minutes, 23 seconds without cuts. The arranger, Les Smith, can be reached at lessmith@ufl.edu.
