El Camino Real - A Latin Fantasy

El Camino Real - A Latin Fantasy (Full Score). By Alfred Reed (1921-2005). For Concert Band (Score). Hal Leonard Concert Band Series. Grade 4.. Grade 5. 56 pages. Published by Edward B. Marks Music (HL.7249).

El Camino Real (“The Royal Road” or “The King's Highway”) was commissioned by the 581st Air Force Band and its commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler. This fantasy is based on a series of Spanish folk melodies and underscored by chord progressions used by generations of flamenco guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have created a vast body of what many consider authentic Spanish music.

The music follows a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, with a first section that is based on the dance form known as the jota, and second contrasting section derived from the fandango.

This is a very nice piece of music. One of the other challenges in addition to the tempo of the first and last sections with all the notes is the meter changes and the counting that goes with it. I would consider this piece a major work as opposed to...

some filler piece of lesser difficulty and impact. Good French horn players are particularly required for this one.

  • February 18, 2008 LOVE LOVE LOVE!

My band is currently working on this piece for our upcoming Festival Competition. Even for the top band at my high school, it is quite difficult. If I were a band director, I would think long and hard about whether or not my band was ready to play this piece...

before selecting it. But, if an advanced band is ready to take it on, I would highly recommend it. From the runs to the corral in the middle to the exciting end, this piece is absolutely gorgeous and energetic. I would put it in my top five any day.

el camino real is a very difficult piece, but when you nail it, it sure feels good. my high school band played it and played it well. we toured europe with el camino in our repertoire. it has lots of energy in the music that you need to feel when...

    you play it.

  • August 13, 2004 My favourite ever

This is without a doubt the most incredible and touching piece I've ever played. Only exceptional ensembles should attempt this piece; it is extremely difficult to acheive a wonderful sound, but it's well worth the effort. I am a high school student, however our concert band is of...

a standard of most professional ensembles. This piece is certainly one of two all-time favourites that we have ever played, the other being "And the Multitude, with One Voice, Spoke"; both that and El Camino have brought some members of our ensemble to tears. It was immensely enjoyable to play.
