Research in pedagogy suggests that most students learn best from an intervallic approach to reading music, which this course is not. Numerous finger numbers run interference with learning to read music. Therefore, I cannot recommend the course for use as a primary method. That said, if a teacher is willing...

to white out the numbers, these books make an outstanding supplement to an intervallic course. The pieces emphasize the contrapuntal style. Much of the music consists of excerpts of classical masterworks, arranged to give the student a taste of the original. The music is interesting, and the pieces are short enough so as not to detract from the work in the primary course. Since the pictures are black and white, the course can be used for older students without being too insulting. Multikey training occurs early in the course. Keys progress to four sharps and flats by Book 4. Overall, the course leads a student to early grade 3 with interesting, melodious music.
