About Hal Leonard Fake Books

A "fake book" contains songs written in a concise format that includes only the melody and chords, letting you interpret the song's performance as you feel is appropriate. This is great for quickly learning songs by yourself or with an ensemble.

Each song in a fake book only has a single melody actually written out in notes, which is usually the vocal or lead melody. This melody will have the lyrics written beneath the notes, with each word aligned to its corresponding note. Above the notes of the melody will appear the names of the appropriate chords to play - for example, a "C minor" chord would be written as "Cmin" or Cm", rather than writing out all of the notes in those chords as they appeared in the original version of the song.

This format is very compact, which is why you will often see fakebooks containing 500 or more songs.

This music book is great. There are more songs than I expected. I'm very happy with it.

A good selection of songs of different types. The ballads, Carole King, Sedaka, and country songs sound pretty good. For some reason the R&B, Elvis and motown songs are not arranged as well. Also the font size is very small for my eyes. These condensed sheets are best used...

to give you a basis to flesh out a full arrangement as these sheets lack a bass line, harmony, counter melodies, many intro's and turn arounds. This book is worth it for the lead line, chords and lyrics. Good cross reference, songwriter- performing artist.

This is a helpful book in getting arrangements ready for our 9 piece band for a special gig we will be doing. Once in a while there is an editing error, but they can be figured out by an amature arranger.

There is probably no fake book of 50s and 60s music that has it all. This is one of the better compilation of "oldies" in typical fake book style. My only criticism of this and other fake books is that I prefer a spiral bound book were I can use...

only one side of the page when planing. While this is "spiral bound" you cannot fold it into itself and just play one page at a time. It has to opened fully.
