I bought this book after hearing recordings of these etudes. These etudes are tricky, but so far, I find that they do not surpass Chopin's etudes. Musically, there are of interest, especially the longer ones, because they are more like substantial compositions that use a specific technical study. Anyone...

playing Chopin's etudes should give these a look, especially number three (G major).

The Alkan Etudes, which are sadly underperformed and recognized, are truly works of a genius. The harmonic writing is like Chopin, and the pianistic writing is a lot like Liszt (a friend of Alkan). Among the set, the sixth and the third are my favorites. The others are good as...

well. There is a sort of early romantic feel about each of them, which is very attractive and satisfying.
