Sigmund Hering (1899–1986) is the most prolifically publishedtrumpet pedagogue of the twentieth century. During his career astrumpeter with the Philadelphia Orchestra, he composed overtwenty etude books and method books for trumpet and trumpetsolos. His 408 published etudes—not including the material foundin his four volume Trumpet Course—are a monumental achievement. The best yardstick for seeing how essential Hering’s materialsare to today’s musicians is easily seen by the fact that most ofhis music is still published and used widely today.Dr. Thomas R. Erdmann has discovered two unpublished works byHering that are being published now for the first time. The posthumouspublication of this collection and Studies on Ornamentationfor Trumpet by Sigmund Hering, serves trumpet students andteachers everywhere who want logical and well-organized methodsfor these subjects by one of the masters in the field.

The best yardstick for seeinghow essential Hering’s materials are to today’s musicians is easily seen by the fact thatmost of his music is still published and used widely today. In doing research for my book, An Annotated Bibliography And Guide To ThePublished Trumpet Music Of Sigmund Hering (Edwin Mellen), I came across the fact thatthere were only two areas in which Hering appears to have been deficient in his pedagogicaloutput. They were: (1) exercises which develop double- and triple-tonguingtechnique, and; (2) exercises which develop and introduce ornaments to young trumpetstudents. Contact with his family led to my discovering a number of trumpet pedagogicalmaterials composed by Hering that were left unpublished at his death. I found itfascinating to learn that those two trumpet pedagogical areas left untouched by Heringat his death were actually covered in tutorials he had written, but were left unpublished. These new books, Double and Triple Tonguing, A Complete Approach for theTrumpet and Studies on Ornamentation for Trumpet, are the first new published tutorialsby Hering since his death. These books are presented here for the first time by Hering’sonly publisher, Carl Fischer LLC. Both tutorials set out a course of study to learn thegoals of each book in a well laid out and logically flowing manner.I would like to thank Hering’s family for their assistance with this project as wellas Larry Clark at Carl Fischer for his invaluable assistance during the preparation ofthese manuscripts. It is my belief these volumes will be used by trumpet teachers andtheir students just as much as his previously published volumes.
