  • November 13, 2008 Useful edition of Beautitful music

I'm rather new to lieder, yet I find a number of these achingly beautiful (e.g. #1 and 2), and approachable in my second year of voice study (I have played instruments for years). This edition is clearly printed and provides good translations (so you are know what you...

are singing if you don't speak German). The transpostions for low voice seem consistent so that the overall tonality of the song cycle is preserved.

  • November 16, 2007 Wide Range and Lots of Subtlety

First of all, I am a pre-professional early music/romantic countertenor singing the Dichterliebe, so interpretations could be colored by that. The range is quite vast: from low G to high F(G optional). Schumann, however, understands the qualities of the voice and uses this for expressional purposes. Otherwise...

, the Dictherliebe can be reasonably easily performed on a superficial level. There are some ensemble issues that need to be resolved. If one wishes to delve deeper, the substance is definately there. Irony is particularly prevalent throughout the entire work. The work is spectatular, and like all great works comes with a bag of challenges to overcome.
