  • January 18, 2008 A profound and moving work

Days Beyond is based upon a well-known, ancient Chinese poem and the work evokes the color and feel of the words of the poem. It is a beautiful, sensitive work that explores the technical and emotional range of the saxophone as well as masterful pairings of the saxophone with...

piano. The work is demanding for the saxophonist with extensive low register writing and virtuoso passages in the upper register. The piano part is also demanding technically and must be carefully balanced to the transparent saxophone writing in many places. There is a clear eastern color/delicacy to the melodies and harmonies that Hope Lee brings to the work, she is a Chinese-Canadian composer. This is a work for professionals or university-level performers. I commissioned this work with pianist Jamie Syer a few years ago and am recording it in the coming months. This is a wonderful, serious composition that is worth the time to learn.
